Even if you’re a seasoned Texas gun owner, certain terms can be confusing, at the very least, leave you wondering if there’s something you’re not fully aware of. This is frequently the case when obtaining a CHL (concealed handgun license) and an LTC (license to carry). The confusion over CHL and LTC stems from the fact that some gun owners in Texas continue to use “CHL,” despite the fact that the official term has been “LTC” since 2017.
An LTC is a license to carry. Since 2017, this has been the preferred official term in Texas. The state legislature voted to use this term instead of “concealed handgun license” at that time. A license to carry encompasses both concealed and open carry; both have been legal in Texas since 2016.
