To apply for a Texas license to carry, there are two steps. The first step is to enroll in a training course (either in person or online), followed by the completion of an application and submission of fingerprints. These are concurrent exercises, and you may begin with either one.

1. Enroll in a training course:
You can take the Texas License to carry (LTC) training course in a classroom setting (5-6 hours) or online (4 hours). State legislation requires between four and six hours of classroom instruction, which includes a written examination.
Additionally, there is a shooting practical that requires between one and two hours at the range. Each must be passed with a score of at least 70%. The course and examination include Texas firearms legislation pertaining to weapons and the use of deadly force, nonviolent dispute resolution, handgun use and safety, and correct storage procedures.
The shooting practical demands you to fire a total of fifty rounds, including twenty shots at three yards, twenty shots at seven yards, and ten bullets at fifteen yards.
Please keep in mind that this is NOT a basic firearms class and that prior weapon expertise is preferred.

When qualifying, optical enhancers such as lasers, red dot sights, or scopes are not authorized; you will be requested to remove them before shooting.
Please ensure that you have ammo (at least one box of 50 counts) on hand prior to booking your shooting proficiency and that your firearm is in good operating order and well lubricated.

· A less expensive option, and one that many prefer, is the ONLINE CLASS. The online program costs $80 ($50 if purchased outside of the West Texas area and intends to arrange for a teacher to do the shooting section).
Texas License to carry online course allows you to take the class at your own pace, without having to sit through the entire four hours. Once your online course is complete, LTC will contact you to organize your shooting practical.
2. Finishing the application and obtaining fingerprints.
There are two methods to approach this stage of the procedure.
- The first is to complete the ONLINE APPLICATION and click the green “apply” button (Fees to DPS are payable at the time of application… $40+). Additionally, the status can be viewed by clicking the green “login” button.
- After completing the online application, fingerprinting ($10+) can be scheduled through Identogo.com.
DPS allows up to two years after finishing a classroom or online training course to submitting an application/fee. Once you’ve submitted your application fee, you have one year to finish the procedure.
