So you might be wonfering How much time will it take to get my TX LTC? Well, it takes typically about 8 weeks from the moment you turn in your paperwork to Texas DPS and getting your license as it takes some time to process.
This time frame is referring to the point after you have finished both the classroom portion of the License to Carry and the live-fire test under live-fire instructor supervision.
However, below will be a detailed overview of what exactly the process looks like to get a License to Carry in the State of Texas.
License to Carry Classroom
This is the first part of the License to Carry process.
The length of a License to Carry class in the state of Texas is 4-5 hours long with an exam at the end.
In the class, an array of important things are covered which are difficult to learn on your own. They include gun safety, handling usage, state laws, rules, and regulations as well as other things pertaining to your firearm.
Traditionally, Texas only offered in-person classes, and all this was taught in one session. However, in 2016, the state of Texas passed legislation that allowed for License to Carry classes to be conducted online and be taken in a virtual environment.
This was a game-changer as you no longer needed to sit in a classroom and be flooded with information in one 4-5-hour sitting.
Rather, the class is broken into smaller 15–20-minute video modules that can be completed one at a time at your own pace as progress saves each time you complete a module.
Live-Fire Test
After successfully completing the classroom portion of the License to Carry, whether, in person or online, the next and final test is a shooting test.
You must go to an approved shooting range and under the direct supervision of a live-fire instructor, you must demonstrate basic firearm proficiency by successfully shooting a total of 50 rounds at different distances.
Usually, it is 20 rounds at the 3 and 7-yard line and an additional 10 rounds at the 15-yard line. You need to score at least 175 points out of 250 points to pass, which essentially is scoring a minimum of a 70%.
Though the test is timed, you are given plenty of time to shoot so there is no need to worry about running out of time.
Application / Paperwork and Fingerprints
Once you pass both the shooting qualification and the classroom portion of the LTC training, you can now submit your application to the DPS office, and you can fill it out online and submit it online as well. This is usually quick.
Once the application is submitted to the Texas DPS office, you will need to book an appointment at an IdentiGO location to get your fingerprints taken.
Unlike the other portions of the LTC process, the time it takes for you to successfully get your fingerprints mainly depends on the IdentiGO location, whether they have an opening, if they are busy or not, etc.
Once all this is set and done, it should take no more than 60 days for everything to be processed.
If it is taking longer than 60 days, you can contact the DPS office, and they will tell you why.
Common reasons for a delay are that the application was filed incorrectly, you didn’t qualify due to a felony, or you committed some class A or B misdemeanor, etc.
Otherwise, you will receive your license in 60 days, and you can rejoice!
